A quick look-back... Still hoping 2020 doesn't catch us.
I waited for a couple of weeks to write this, mainly because I didn’t know where we were at with calamity and disaster. I didn’t want to jinx our entry into the new year.
I will put it simply, 2020 was an absolute poop-festival of a year (shit show for those with thicker skins and stronger stomachs)! I will never forget 2020, it’s the year that keeps giving. In terms of drama and material, there was so much material to work with.
First, and
most obvious there was the pandemic. The old COVID 19 ploy, it gets them every
time. We will be recovering for the next couple of decades, and we still don’t
have it under control. Where is that P.P.E.?!
Next on our
timeline were shortages in the supermarkets, thank god for bidets. Looking back,
I still can’t understand how toilette paper was the hinge pin around which
civilization hung. I thought it would be food, water, or gas, you know, like the Mad Max movies. I have
never seen so much panic and desperation. It’s a sight to behold, seeing perfectly
rational people fist fighting over rolls of Cottonelle ultra.
Social
distancing didn’t really bother me since my personal bubble is so large. I
prefer people stay at least six feet away at all times. It was relieving when people
followed the social distancing recommendations. I believe masks are a good idea,
but I can’t understand how fast they became fashion statements and also simultaneously points of contention between business owners and customers.
Nonetheless, I will never forget that Lui Viton face shield I saw in the Walmart. That's class.
By April people
were protesting, but not about the government’s inability to act in the face of
a pandemic. No, that would have been a breath of fresh air. For some reason,
white cops started thinking their racist tendencies were their best qualities. Someone gave them permission to show it off; racial
inequality happened (was exposed). Even in protest, it’s hard for a person to
pick a side of the fence. There is so much hypocrisy out there.
Murder
hornets was fun; the terror, the buzzing death! Then, and also at the same time,
things got hot in Australia. All you people from down under know what I am
talking about, please give my regards to the koala families.
However, one thing remained consistent throughout the year; our government incompetency remained strong.
It’s good to have a constant to revolve around. If there's one thing we could
count on last year, it was that no one in office would make the right decisions.
We just couldn’t have America, or the world for that matter, without wealthy elite people making horrible
decisions for the rest of us. Except you, Prince Harry, and Megan, you were smart enough to get out before the angry mobs with torches came knocking.
As we
moved on through the year, we discovered that it’s possible, but not very fun
to win Netflix, and by win, I mean watch the entire catalogue of shows. Right
down to “The Floor is Lava” and the "Tiger King". I think we
all discovered that Cabin fever is a real thing and that homicide is a
temping option.
I won’t
list the people we lost last year. That would be a long list, and all the wrong people stayed. We lost a lot of good people, and they will be missed. To
those who didn’t leave when they should have, shame on you (Shame! Shame! Shame!).
Then there
was that election, the one we are still trying to untie. It isn’t over yet, so
I will leave it out in the rain like that cake that got ruined a few decades back. Our country can’t take
four more years under dictator Trump, and the options weren't too great. There is nothing else I can say about
that.
This year isn't looking much better, but it is still early. I will look forward to 2021 and hope for the best. My cynicism might get the better of me though. Only time will tell.
Some honorable
mentions from last year include Lava Sharks, locus
swarms in Africa, the Beirut Port explosion, staggering numbers of 2020 refugees
(from many countries), immigrant children being put in cages, imprisoned
migrant mothers and fathers, earthquakes, record hurricane seasons, and the
whole goddamn world is on fire.
Cheers!
