My projects and what they mean...
Sometimes it's super hard to find the time to write or make art.
Over the last two months, my posts have thinned. As I have mentioned, I have a lot of projects up in the air right now—these projects are both personal and professional. One of the largest is the construction of my future home, even though the house is very modest.
The construction part isn't the problem. It's the bureaucracy surrounding it. It's the permits, the land, and site prep. The county and country where I live has restricted certain types of houses, and also construction on certain types of land. Washington state has some badass energy requirements too (they really tripped us up). We're talking triple-pane windows and radiant floor heating to meet them. It's frustrating to jump through all these hoops so that I can have a nice little place in the country. Sometimes it feels like pissing in the wind- it will leave a bad taste in your mouth. However, I still want a place where I can write and make art, all in a quiet space.
In the meantime, some of my passions have suffered a little. I have been getting up early and going to bed late so they can be completed. In many ways, that's the point- What is your passion worth? What are the sacrifices you will make to bring them into the world? Despite the trouble, I still think anything worth fighting for, anything you have sacrificed for will have inherent value.
The house I am building is one of those things; a labor of love. We bought our land, ten beautiful acres, pre-pandemic. Our long-term goal was to build a house and live there for the rest of our lives; that part hasn't changed. The planning and development, however, have changed at least ten times. The cost of materials doesn't get a person what it used to. So, we modified our plan... a lot.
Well, that plan is finally pinned down, and with any luck, we will be breaking ground in a couple of weeks.
This project means the world to me, but so do writing and my art. I have always said make the time for the things you love and do them with everything you have. However, sometimes basic needs must be secured before we can get to the fun stuff. I don't believe in compromising when it comes to my passions, but I also know that those passions cannot be achieved if the necessities of life haven't been met. That's right, I just got Maslow involved, deal with it.
So, this is me letting you all know, that I will continue and post as much as I can, but things might not thicken up until my house is done. This is me updating and moving forward; it is me redoubling and committing to making time for everything I love. And keeping you, the people who come here, appraised of the future. Updates will be coming soon so keep an eye out for them.
Cheers!
